National Garden Month has everything to do with the Food Bank…Here’s how

I love trivia and filling my brain with bits of awesome knowledge, don’t you? Well, I have some super cool trivia bits for you today folks, so get ready!

Did you know that April is National Gardening Month? I just learned that this past week when I was at work, here at the Hays County Food Bank. They seem to have a month or a week for everything, and I must say that this is one of the more exciting months to celebrate, if you ask me.

You may be wondering what’s so spectacular about this month’s celebration, so let me share some fun facts about gardening.  According to National Gardening Association’s (NGA) website, www.nationalgardeningmonth.com,  “nurturing plants is good for us: attitudes toward health and nutrition improve, kids perform better at school, and community spirit grows.”

Cool, huh? I had no idea that playing in the dirt, planting pretty flowers and growing awesome food was ALSO good for the soul and for the mind.

Here’s another fun factoid from NGA: On average a well-maintained food garden yields a $500 return when considering a typical gardener’s investment and the market price of produce.” Whoa, that’s a lot of money to be saved! So not only will you be smarter and feel happier, you’ll also save a lot of money on produce that you can use elsewhere!

Wait, there’s more! Did you ALSO know, that this week is Healthy Texas Week? Yep. This week focuses on Texans getting their rears in gear with exercise and healthy eating, and what could be MORE healthy than eating organic fruits and veggies from your very own garden, or from a Farmers Market, like the ones here in San Marcos?

So what does any of this have to do with the Food Bank? A lot! Let me be less vague, by asking yet another rhetorical question. Did you know that the Food Bank wants your produce? That’s right!

The Hays County Food Bank has embarked on a new campaign called, “Fresh Quest” We want to get the word out there to everyone in Hays County that while we love and appreciate the support on the canned food front, we want everyone to know that we love and accept fresh produce, too.

We are already receiving fresh produce from our friends from the community gardens in San Marcos, like the Dunbar Neighborhood Garden, part of the San Marcos Community Gardens project. We are also receiving fresh produce from HEB on our daily pick-ups from their store. How much we get varies widely from day to day, week to week.

We’re doing a lot to get the word out there about this new initiative, including dressing up as vegetables and talking with vendors at the San Marcos Farmers Market this past weekend. Yep. I dressed up as a carrot, and Community Relations Coordinator, Jane, dressed up as peas in a pod. Let me just tell you, there’s something totally liberating about dressing up as a carrot for a Saturday afternoon.

The Food Bank will also be taking fresh produce donations on April 27th between 9 am and 1 pm at the Saturday Farmers Market on the square and between 1pm and 8 pm  at  the Foodstock stage, a celebration of Hays County and all that makes it great:  music, art, food, the rivers, and coming together as a community to help our neighbors in need.  The April Foodstock concert will be held on the Hays County Courthouse lawn, part of the annual KTSW radio MR Fest music festival.

See, I told you that National Gardening Month had a lot to do with the Hays County Food bank!
