Philanthropy Day-A Time to Give Thanks to Those Who Support Us

Webster’s Dictionary defines philanthropy as the practice of giving money and time to help make life better for other people.  The Hays County Food Bank (HCFB) depends on this act of goodwill in order to feed the food insecure in this area. This Friday, November 15, is National Philanthropy Day, so we would like to recognize those special people who are making a difference.  Many thanks and blessings to those who have supported and continue to support us throughout the holiday season as well as the rest of the year.  You guys rock!!

Need a little crunch? Try kale or zucchini chips!

At last night’s client cooking class, Assistant Operations Manager Kirby Rowton and five members of Texas State University’s Student Nutrition Organization (SNO) taught eight of our clients how to make kale and zucchini chips.

Kale and zucchini chips are healthy snacks. Zucchinis are 95% water, low in sodium, and rich in vitamin C. One zucchini has just 25 calories – and more potassium than a banana! Meanwhile, one cup of chopped kale provides more than 100% of the daily recommended value of vitamins A, C, and K. Check out the recipes below!

Health Matters! Read about our new cooking classes!

Our assistant operations manager, Kirby Rowton, has recently taken the initiative to increase nutrition awareness amongst our clients. Kirby, with the help of her nutrition interns, has started hosting a monthly cooking class teaching clients how to cook the food they receive from us with fun and healthy recipes. We are so excited that Kirby has enhanced our mission (to provide food to underprivileged families and individuals in the greater Hays County area) and is increasing the ways we can better the lives of community members in need.    Read more »

Foodstock – from the eyes of an intern

The sight of dark clouds by the San Marcos Courthouse couldn’t stop us while we set up for last month’s Foodstock event.

What would YOU do?

After several months of steadily rising temperatures, the first day of summer has officially arrived.  As your utility bills also start to climb, it would be a good time to pause and reflect.  What would YOU do if you had to choose between being able to stay cool enough to be reasonably comfortable or buy enough food for your family to be healthy and free from hunger?

This time of year we serve people who may not normally need our help but who simply don’t have enough money to pay their electric bill,  prescription medicine, and still have enough money to buy groceries.  As we approach the last week of National Hunger Awareness Month, we’d like to suggest several different ways you can support us in our efforts to end hunger in Hays County all year long, especially since hunger never takes a vacation.

An Intern’s Take on “The Internship” Movie

The Internship came out this past weekend. It is the movie that is about two guys who lose their sales jobs mid-career and decide to take an internship at the well-known company Google. The movie has been getting a lot of praise from real-life fellow interns. As an intern at Hays County Food Bank the movie was surprisingly accurate about the world of interning.    Read more »
