Good Works at the S(o)uper Bowls

Yesterday, millions of people gathered together, regardless of race, gender, age, or religion, to watch the most viewed broadcasting event of the year.  The Super Bowl attracts viewers of all types.  Those who have a team directly involved in it are the obvious target.  Then you have those who simply cannot stand a particular team, so they tune in to hopefully watch them lose.  There are the die-hard football fans, the bandwagon fans, the fair weather fans, the fans of any type of big gathering, the spouses and significant others of crazy football fans, and the big commercial watchers.  Regardless of who you are, there’s a good chance that the game was on wherever you were.

National Day of Service

“Not everybody can be famous but everybody can be great, because greatness is determined by service.”  Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. spoke these words many years ago, and today we honor and remember him.  He believed every man, woman, and child had the right to freedom and justice in America, regardless of skin color, age, income, job, etc.  All people in this nation should come together to make America a better place to live.  Dr. King believed in service, and that everyone should do their part to make this country the best it can possibly be.

Hays County Food Bank Wants You

Image

The end of the year is upon us and you know what that means: New Year’s Resolutions!  Everyone always gets so excited to start the new year off right and create a better self by joining a gym, eating healthy, managing their budgets better, or maybe even giving up a vice like cigarettes or alcohol.  However, many will forget about their plans to improve themselves and go back to old ways.  Gym memberships will gather dust in wallets; pizza and burgers will take the place of fruits and vegetables; loans will be taken out; and a few beers and cigars will be handed out on Super Bowl Sunday.  It is perfectly ok; we all go through this every year.

Help Us Tackle Hunger

As you may know, Turkeys Tackling Hunger is our largest fundraising campaign of the year, and consequently, it makes this time of year the busiest as well!  3,063 total families, including individuals, partner agency referrals, and home-bound clients signed up to receive a “turkey box” this year, a trending increase from years before. Though we have already purchased, assembled and are currently distributing the turkey boxes to our clients this week, we need help covering our expense.

Philanthropy Day-A Time to Give Thanks to Those Who Support Us

Webster’s Dictionary defines philanthropy as the practice of giving money and time to help make life better for other people.  The Hays County Food Bank (HCFB) depends on this act of goodwill in order to feed the food insecure in this area. This Friday, November 15, is National Philanthropy Day, so we would like to recognize those special people who are making a difference.  Many thanks and blessings to those who have supported and continue to support us throughout the holiday season as well as the rest of the year.  You guys rock!!

Need a little crunch? Try kale or zucchini chips!

At last night’s client cooking class, Assistant Operations Manager Kirby Rowton and five members of Texas State University’s Student Nutrition Organization (SNO) taught eight of our clients how to make kale and zucchini chips.

Kale and zucchini chips are healthy snacks. Zucchinis are 95% water, low in sodium, and rich in vitamin C. One zucchini has just 25 calories – and more potassium than a banana! Meanwhile, one cup of chopped kale provides more than 100% of the daily recommended value of vitamins A, C, and K. Check out the recipes below!
